The University of Navarra celebrated the investiture ceremony of 139 researchers who have defended their doctoral dissertation in the 2018-2019 academic year. The new doctors come from 22 countries and 15 faculties or centers of the institution, and 21 of them correspond to the campus of San Sebastian.

The event was attended by President, Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero; the godmother of the graduating class, María Dolores Odero de Dios, professor and researcher at department of Biochemistry and Genetics; and Irene Cantero González, doctor of School of Pharmacy and Nutrition, who spoke on behalf of her class.

"From now on it is your turn to continue on a path committed to research in the service of society," said President after the imposition of caps on the doctors.

He also remembered Don Ismael Sánchez Bella, the first President of the University, who passed away last December 16. Reviewing his arrival in Pamplona and the beginnings of the University, he said: "The story of Don Ismael reminds us that only optimists go far".

Service to society and individuals

For her part, Professor María Dolores Odero de Dios stressed the need to collaborate and work as a team, since "the adventure of doctoral research cannot be done alone". She also stressed that the ultimate goal "must be to serve society and people". To conclude, he encouraged to follow the example of Dr. Janet Rowley, who showed him that "good researchers are those who have a real interest in science and give their lives for it but, at the same time, try to do good to the people around them".

Finally, Irene Cantero González pointed out that not only have they achieved the maximum specialization in a topic, but also that the doctorate has taught them "to think, to remain calm, to manage frustration, to be objective and critical and to seek the truth".

The 139 theses defended in the 2018-2019 academic year were made possible thanks to the contribution of institutions such as the association de Amigos de la Universidad de Navarra, Fundación Bancaria "la Caixa", Fundación Caja Navarra and Banco Santander, as well as alumni.
