An expert says Artificial Intelligence (AI) will change the work of physicians but cannot replace "clinical judgment, conscience, emotions or ethics."

"Artificial intelligence is a paradigm shift, its use is going to change the way oncologists work on a day-to-day basis and, without a doubt, it is a step of extraordinary magnitude for patients." This was stated at the University of Navarra, Eduardo Díaz-Rubio, Professor Emeritus of Medical Oncology at the Complutense University and President of the Royal National Academy of Medicine, at the inauguration of the congress of Oncology for Students (COE) organized by the students of the faculties of biomedical sciences. The event, which celebrated its 20th edition, addressed the application of artificial intelligence to clinical oncology. 

The inauguration of the event was attended by María Iraburu, rector of the University of Navarra; Mar Cuadrado, Vice-Dean of Students at the School of Medicine; Salvador Martín Algarra, professor at the School of Medicine and head of the COE; and María Torregrosa, a student at the School and vice-president of the COE XX. 

In his speech, Professor Eduardo Díaz-Rubio analysed the application of AI to medicine, as a new resource educational and welfare. He pointed out that artificial intelligence can help in the prediction of outcomes, new treatments, appropriate doses, early detection or treatments with fewer side effects. "We must seek the complementarity of the specific tasks that have to do with technology and artificial intelligence with the functions and values that the doctor has to preserve, such as clinical judgment, conscience, emotions or ethics."

In the congress Dr. Idoia Ochoa, from thearea of Biotechnology and Medicine of the School of Engineering-Tecnun the University of Navarra; Dr. Nuria Ribelles, Head of Section of the Medical Oncology Service of the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital Hospital in Malaga and team member whereas it has promoted the application of artificial intelligence models to improve the care, treatment and care of cancer patients;   Dr. Marina Álvarez, Minister of Health of the board from Andalusia between 2017-2019 and an international leader in breast cancer; and Dr. Ruben Armañanzas, biomedical engineer and researcher of the Institute of Data Science and AI DATAI of the University of Navarra.

The congress of Oncology for Students at the University of Navarra More than 230 students from 19 Spanish universities. The goal main of this meeting Yearly is Know everything related to cancer research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care from a scientific, human and social perspective.  

The congress It included workshops and round tables that will train participants on different issues, from how to deal with grief and communicating bad news; the diagnosis of familial cancer, music therapy in oncology, emotional management techniques in cancer patients and oncological emergencies.
