The Intxaurdi Kirol Elkartea is the only all-women's football club in Donostia. Since 1985 it has worked to normalise the practice of sport by women. The city of Donostia, in recognition of the club's trajectory, has awarded it the medal of merit. Mentxu Jaca, a teacher at Tecnun, is delighted to receive the news, as she has been the president of Intxaurdi for the last 4 years.

What pushed you to become president?
At a certain point there was a need to incorporate more women into the management of the club. The board offered me the presidency and I said yes. The management team is made up of very good professionals and good people and I felt very supported.

And what does it mean for you to be one?
A great responsibility. The club is made up of many people who work very well and hard for women's football, and being the president means that you have to live up to the club. Also because we have a lot of players, and somehow you have to work to make them and their families comfortable.

Why do you think you have been awarded the Citizen's Merit Medal?
I believe that the medal is a recognition to the well done work, to the route of the club and to the current status . It was born in Intxaurrondo more than 30 years ago with the goal to offer a space to some girls through the practice of soccer, in a safe environment in which they could develop. From 1985 we began to compete in a federated way, with the financial aid of the merchants of the neighborhood. We have grown to 182 players and with teams in all categories of grassroots soccer. All this thanks to the great support of families and sponsors. I believe that the merit lies in having been born in those circumstances and having grown up being faithful to our values: effort, respect and teamwork.

How did you receive the news?
With great joy, and a lot of pride to be at the side of people and organisations that are so valuable to the city.

What would you say to the students at Tecnun to encourage them ?
We have a team in the territorial category, in which, if they want, they can train and enjoy playing football. It is a very complete sport that can help them to complement their study time. In a team environment and in the open air you learn a lot and share beautiful experiences. In addition, within the club there are more teams in different categories and we have different shared activities in which they can participate. I encourage you to visit the club's website and get to know us a little better.
