A dozen students from Tecnun traveled last March to the Fraunhofer Institut fur Integrierte Schaltungen. Fraunhofer Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen (IIS) near the town of Nurenberg, in order to learn about the latest technological innovations being developed at this prestigious center, known internationally for being the creator of the MP3 music compression format.

"But, the Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen is not only a reference center in audio compression, but also in digital technologies for cinema, satellite communications and digital broadcasting systems," highlights one of the students who traveled there this year, Ricardo García. "The students had the opportunity to visit the facilities of this world-leading center and enjoy demonstrations of the technology being developed there."

Garcia explains that, after seeing several projects, they had "the opportunity to meet with the heads of these projects in order to be able to start an internship this summer.

In addition to enhancing their professional profile, the visit also allowed the students to learn first-hand about German culture and foster social relations among classmates, "something that is always more complicated to do on a day-to-day basis," according to Ricardo García.

This traditional trip to Germany has been organized in recent years by professors Dr. Juan F. Sevillano and Dr. Igone Vélez, who accompany the group of students of the Telecommunication Systems degree. The latter had the opportunity to meet with researchers from the institute to request summer internships and final projects. These visits to the IIS have served for numerous students from Tecnun to do internships and projects at the Fraunhofer IIS facilities. In addition, some of these students have subsequently been working as researchers at the center itself.
