Experts in new information and communications technologies met at Tecnun with the goal to share the progress of the projects in which they are involved, such as 5G telephony, the optimization of energy savings or the role of big data in healthcare area .

On this last point, Idoia Ochoa, a former student and telecommunications engineer from San Sebastian, explained how, with biological parameters, it is possible to personalize the treatment that each patient will receive. Ochoa, currently a lecturer and researcher at the University of Illinois, argued that, thanks to information compression technology, the quality of a patient's biological data - which until now took up a lot of space - can be improved, thus facilitating their analysis: "Given that sequencing is cheap and a lot of information can be extracted, what we do is provide these algorithms to research centers and hospitals".

This workshop, organized by the network of excellence COMONSENS and the IEEEis part of the Consolider program, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and seeks to promote the network of experts in Telecommunications Engineering. The initiative integrates 135 researchers from 10 research institutions in Spain and is coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).

The meeting was attended by experts such as Geert Leus and Georgios Giannakis, from the University of Delft and Minnesota, respectively. Their presentations dealt with new techniques based on signal processing and big data to improve the performance of 5G mobile networks and sensor networks.
