Tecnun students Tecnun Iñigo Azcárate and Javier Esnaola have been awarded for the socio-environmental impact of their projects in the latest edition of the "Tecnun Sostenible" contest. This initiative rewards the best Degree and Master's Degree Projects that address environmental, economic and social challenges aligned with the Basque Country 2030 Environmental framework Program.
A tool to improve mobility to work
Iñigo Azcárate, winner in the PFM category, has developed a tool designed to facilitate decision making in the implementation of sustainable mobility interventions for commuting to work. His project integrates a machine learning algorithm that predicts the mode of transport adopted by users and proposes regionally adapted solutions.
"It is a real honor, especially because it comes from my own university. It represents the recognition of a whole year of work and dedication," says Azcárate, who has focused his research on the optimization of urban transportation.
The impact of the project is not only limited to the environmental sphere, but also promotes more accessible and efficient mobility alternatives. "These subject of initiatives are very positive, as they encourage the development of specific areas such as sustainability. It would be ideal to disseminate them more widely and encourage more students to participate in future editions," the engineer stresses.
Circular Economics and plastics recycling in the Basque Country
Javier Esnaola, winner in the PFG category, has been recognized for his contribution to sustainability through his project, which analyzes plastic circularity models, advanced recycling technologies and best practices at international level. His work seeks to contextualize the current status of the Basque Country in the management of plastic waste, a core topic to face the current environmental and economic challenges.
"This recognition represents not only a staff achievement, but also a motivation to continue working on initiatives that generate a positive impact on society and the environment," explains Esnaola.
The award winners agreed on the importance of this subject of initiative to promote the culture of sustainability in engineering and encourage future participants and those who are not sure whether to apply. "Whatever the project, it is always possible to find an approach related to sustainability. Reflecting on that impact is a core topic," concludes Azcárate.
