On January 27 and 28, the EKINN Building, located in the center of San Sebastián, hosted the second edition of the IAthon. The quotation together twenty-five students from the University of Navarra School of Engineering at the University of Navarra, eighteen Degree seven master's Degree , who participated in an academic hackathon focused on the application of generative artificial intelligence and the development automation programs.
The challenge for the contestants was to create systems capable of generating up-to-date reports quickly and reliably. The idea was to facilitate the work of institutions and companies by reducing the time they spend analyzing information guide. The aim is to help them make better decisions based on clear, high-quality data that enables them to evaluate results, detect trends, and plan future actions.
To achieve the goal, the students organized themselves into five teams of five members and, within a limited time, had to create these systems capable of processing structured instructions and automatically generating detailed reports in different formats and languages. To help them with the task, they received basic functional code and attended an IBM talk on the use of agents, entitled "Essential Guide to Agentic AI."
The challenge was sponsorship CAF, Datua AI, Fomento San Sebastián, IBM, Multiverse Computing, and Quarizmi, and was promoted by professors and doctoral students from the Biomedical Engineering and Sciencedepartment at Tecnun, including Ángel Rubio, Helena Jorge, Joseba Sancho, Josefina Arcagni, and Carlos Javier Rodríguez. During the event, this team of researchers answered students' questions and supervised the teams to ensure they achieved the small goals set throughout the hackathon.
One of the organizers, Helena Jorge, a PhD student from San Sebastian, emphasized that "the event is an ideal opportunity to awaken and consolidate students' interest in emerging technologies, face a real challenge with a collaborative spirit, and learn to manage time."
Many of the students who participated in this edition had already done so last year. This is the case of Nerea Gorrotxategi, a student of the Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering and a native of San Sebastián. Gorrotxategi highlights that the experience brings together students from different branches of engineering and emphasizes that "this allows for a broader vision, as the project shape with the knowledge and ways of thinking that each team membercontributes."
The winning team
On Wednesday, February 4, submission and diplomas submission took place at the Tecnun Txoko, with all teams in attendance. The winning team was Neural Net Ninjas, made up of Pablo Cheng, Emilio Larrea, Micaela Núñez, Israel Rivera, and Xabier Ros.
Its main distinguishing feature was the implementation of a multi-agent system: a set of artificial intelligence agents that work in a coordinated manner. In addition, one of these agents was specifically dedicated to cleaning and organizing the data, eliminating inconsistent information and thus ensuring a more reliable and consistent result .
