Researchers from the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Tecnun have been working for the past year on development on the next generation of vascular medical devices. The research is being conducted at framework of the Europeanproject Blood2Power, whose researchers were given quotation in Tecnun last week. The meeting was attended by some members of the European consortium, led by the i3S institute, and composed of Tecnun- School of Engineering of the University of Navarra, the Institute of Materials Physics of the University of Porto (IFIMUP) and the Medical University of Vienna.
As highlighted by Andoni Beriain, researcher who leads the project at Tecnun, "the final goal is to work in a multidisciplinary way to reduce mortality caused by cardiovascular diseases, which currently stands at 16.8 million deaths per year worldwide".
Specifically, Tecnun researchers Andoni Beriain, Noemí Pérez, Daniel Valderas, Javier Díaz, Antonio Zelada, Shahabi Mehdi and Yordanis Alonso will work on the development electronic system and an energy management unit. "The project aims to develop an intelligent vascular prosthesis capable of generating energy and self-controlling its operation and we have been working on it for a year now," notes Beriain. The final goal , as he explains, is that "data can be collected and transmitted to an external device, such as a mobile. Sending alerts can improve prevention and response to cardiovascular events.
